Showcasing History
Nursery
FS1 have been learning about the changes that happen as we get older. Using their chronology skills, they ordered events and created a timeline of a human lifecycle. The children then drew a picture to compare the similarities and differences between what they looked like as a baby and what they look like now.
Reception
As part of their ‘Dinosaurs’ topic, the children in FS2 learnt about the English palaeontologist, Mary Anning. The children enjoyed making some spectacular discoveries of their own as they took on the role of palaeontologists to uncover real fossils and bones and enjoyed learning their names - ammonite, coprolite and mosasaur. The children then had a roarsome time making fossils out of playdough.
Year 2
Year 2 left no stone unturned with their impressive research on one of the world’s most famous prehistoric monuments, Stonehenge, and their non-chronological reports about ‘The Stone Age hunter-gatherer’. The children also visited ‘DIG’ where they fully immersed themselves in the excavation and discovery of objects and artefacts from The Stone Age and onwards.
Year 3
As part of their topic ‘Ancient Egypt’, Year 3 got the chance to ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ as they created a human timeline of the earliest civilisations. The children also researched British archaeologist and Egyptologist Howard Carter and his fascinating discovery of the tomb with Tutankhamun. After learning about Egyptian burials, year 3 learnt more about the history of burials in Morley and made local visits to ‘Coffin Corner’ and St Mary’s in the Wood.
Year 4
Year 4 were transported back in time to the Victorian classroom as part of their Victorian day. Yes Ma’am! The children had a gruelling day taking part in drill, practising their neatest handwriting, sewing, creating a kite in their woodwork lesson and gardening. After learning about the Industrial Revolution, the children learnt also about the importance of their local textile industry and mills in Morley.
Year 5
As part of their ‘Vikings’ topic, Year 5 children analysed a variety of primary and secondary sources to find out more about them. They particularly enjoyed becoming Viking traders, raiders, settlers and farmers for the day as they visited Murton Park and integrated themselves well into life within a traditional Viking village. For design technology, they baked Viking bread which they later enjoyed eating at their very own Viking feast which consisted of a Viking breakfast (porridge, fruit and honey), our Viking tea (vegetable stew and bread) and our Viking dessert (fruit, honey and buttermilk).
Year 6
Rome wasn’t built in a day! Year 6 children analysed primary and secondary sources about Ancient Rome to find out more about them. They studied Boudicca - a Celtic Queen who led a rebellion against the Roman occupation of Britain – and learnt about the Roman legacy, which they later presented to their classmates. The children particularly enjoyed creating their own Roman shields and practising battle formations including the Testudo.
